Movementally

A practice of movement, breath, and embodied exploration.

There’s a word I’ve always loved. It’s the word wiggle. I think it’s one of the best words ever made. And, you know, it’s the first thing we do as people. We come out into the world, boom, and then we just wiggle. And we sort of go through our lives wiggling, but unfortunately, there are people in this world who don’t like wiggly people that much, and they’d rather wiggly people be straight line people. And so we live in this beautiful natural world full of wiggles. In fact, there’s basically no straight lines at all in nature. But then humans come along and say, right, let’s make all these wiggly lines straight. We’re gonna build roads, we’re gonna build buildings, we’re gonna have systems to keep people in line. But, you know, I think that protecting the inner wiggle is one of the best things we can do. It’s one of the dearest things to fight for to me. And as a musician, the cool thing about music is it’s actually, music is actually like wiggling air. That’s what it is, like air that goes… See, just like that, like that bird squawking in the distance. I think wiggling people are strong people. I don’t think straight lines are strong. Like, take this tree, for example. This tree has branches that bend and that morph and that can adapt with the weather. Sometimes you’re gonna get a storm, you’re gonna get snow, you’re gonna get rain, you’re gonna get wind, all this stuff. And if I think about a tree which has really rigid branches, then in those kinds of storms, those branches will break and snap. And they won’t hold because they’re trying to hold themselves together too much. But a tree, for example, like a willow, that’s really soft, when the storm comes, a willow is able to yield and it’s able to give, and the softness actually is, like that’s the strongest part. I think my favorite people are like that. I think my favorite music is like that. I think it’s adaptive and it’s soft and it knows itself enough. It’s secure enough in itself to bend with the world.
